The Karma Kagyu Trust
In the seventies a lot of wellknown tibetan Lamas and Rinpoches of the Karma Kagyu tradition, like H.H. Gyalwa Karmapa and Kalu Rinpoche, visited Europe and North America. In this time the first buddhist centres were established, organised by western people, who started to practice the Tibetan Buddhism.
Soon the founders of the centres recognized that they needed an incorporated society, which is the legal and organizational basis for the growing dharma activities. Therefore in 1978 we founded the Karma Kagyu Trust in Munich. In 1981 the trust moved to the castle in Wachendorf, also the seat of the new Kamalashila Institute. In the following decades the trust founded several new centres, mainly in Westgermany. Today to the trust belong seven dharma centres (Hamburg, Bremen, Münster, Heidelberg, München, München-Ost, Bad Kreuznach) and also a retreat centre for the traditional Three-years-retreat.
The main duty of the Karma Kagyu Trust is to give the possibility to study and practice the teachings of the Tibetan Buddhism, specially in the Karma Kagyu tradition. Also important is the contact to other buddhist traditions, interreligious connections and the delivery of scientific, cultural and social aspects of buddhism. The spiritual director of the Karma Kagyu Trust is H.H. 17th Karmapa Urgyen Trinley Dorje.
